Overcoming Teacher Guilt: Prioritizing Your Wellbeing

Teacher guilt often stems from the belief that self-care takes time away from students. However, prioritizing your wellbeing makes you a more effective educator.

Many teachers feel guilty when they take time for themselves, believing it detracts from their commitment to students. However, neglecting your wellbeing doesn’t serve anyone in the long run.

The Roots of Teacher Guilt

Teacher guilt often stems from the belief that your work defines your worth. This mindset can lead to overworking and neglecting your needs.

Reframing Guilt

Reframe guilt as an indicator of your dedication and passion, not a flaw. Practice self-compassion by treating yourself as kindly as you would a colleague. Set realistic goals to avoid overcommitting, and focus on quality over quantity in your work. Remember, a well-rested, balanced teacher has more to give. By taking care of yourself, you’re better equipped to care for your students.

View self-care as an act of service—not selfishness. A well-rested, healthy teacher can provide better support for students.

Practical Tips

  1. Practice Self-Compassion: Remind yourself that it’s okay to prioritize your health.
  2. Set Realistic Expectations: Accept that you can’t do everything perfectly.
  3. Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge your efforts, no matter how small.

By overcoming guilt and embracing self-care, you can show up as the best version of yourself for your students.
